How to measure for pavers
Measure the paved area first. For rectangles, use length and width. For circular areas, measure the diameter through the center. Then enter the paver dimensions and planned joint width.
Calculation method
The calculator divides the project area by each paver's effective coverage area. Effective coverage includes the paver size plus the joint width, then the result is increased by the waste allowance.
Effective paver area = (paver length + joint) x (paver width + joint)
Pavers = ceiling(project area / effective paver area)
Base volume = project area x base depth
Worked example
A 12 ft by 10 ft patio is 120 sq ft. With 8 in by 4 in pavers and a 1/8 in joint, the net count is about 516 pavers. With a 10% waste allowance, the required quantity rounds to 568 pavers. If those pavers are sold in packages of 100, the purchase quantity is 6 packages, or 600 pavers.

- Base and sand are simple volume estimates before compaction.
- Paver cuts, border courses, and patterns can change waste.
- Package counts use the pavers-per-package value you enter, and cost uses the whole packaged purchase quantity when packages are shown.
- Structural base needs depend on soil, drainage, climate, and load.
Buying guidance
Confirm paver dimensions, pallet counts, and return policies with the supplier. For curves, herringbone patterns, or many cuts, use a higher waste percentage than a simple rectangle.

Should joint width be included?
For paver count, joint width can slightly reduce the number of pavers because each paver covers its own size plus the planned joint. For very tight layouts, set joint width to zero.
Is the base gravel estimate structural?
No. It is a volume estimate from area and depth. Soil, drainage, traffic, climate, and compaction determine the actual base design.
How much waste should I use?
A 5% to 10% allowance is common for simple rectangular layouts. Curves, diagonal patterns, cuts, and breakage may need more.
