How to measure carpet
Measure the maximum length and width of each room, including closets that will receive carpet. Add multiple room entries for a better total area estimate.
Method
Adjusted carpet = net area x (1 + waste allowance)
Square yards = adjusted carpet / 9
Approximate roll length = adjusted carpet / roll width
Assumptions
- Pad area is based on net room area before carpet waste.
- Roll length is theoretical and does not optimize seams.
- Pattern repeat, stair carpet, closets, and hall turns can increase material.
- Installer measurement should control final ordering.
FAQs
Why is roll length only approximate?
Carpet layout depends on roll direction, pattern matching, seam placement, room shape, and installer choices. The roll length is a planning estimate.
Why show square yards?
Carpet is often sold or quoted by the square yard, while rooms are usually measured in feet. Showing both helps compare quotes.
Does this include installation labor?
No. Labor, tack strip, transitions, stairs, removal, disposal, and subfloor repairs are not included.
