How to measure tile
Measure the tiled area in feet or meters, then enter tile face size in inches or centimeters. For multiple walls or floors, add their areas before entering a known area.
Method
Tile count = project area / tile face area, rounded up
Required tiles = tile count x (1 + waste allowance), rounded up
Boxes = required tiles / tiles per box, rounded up
Assumptions
- Box pricing uses actual whole-box purchase quantity.
- Grout and thinset package counts depend on user-entered coverage.
- Layout pattern, breakage, lippage systems, backer board, membrane, trim, and waterproofing are separate.
- Manufacturer grout and mortar coverage charts should control final ordering.
FAQs
Does grout joint width change the tile count?
This calculator uses tile face size for quantity planning. Joint width is shown for notes because grout coverage depends heavily on joint dimensions and product data.
Why does purchased tile count exceed required tile count?
When tiles are sold in boxes, the calculator rounds up to whole boxes and shows the actual purchased tile count.
How much waste should I use?
Simple straight layouts often use about 10%. Diagonal patterns, herringbone, niche work, and many cuts can need more.
