How to measure for sod
Measure each lawn section separately. Rectangles work well for open runs, circles work for round patches, and known area is useful when you already have a measured plan.
How the calculation works
Adjusted area = net area x (1 + waste allowance)
Pieces = adjusted area / coverage per piece, rounded up
Pallets = adjusted area / coverage per pallet, rounded up
Assumptions
- Piece and pallet coverage come from the supplier or product listing.
- Waste covers trimming, shape irregularity, and small measurement errors.
- Purchased coverage is based on whole pieces or whole pallets.
- Soil prep, starter fertilizer, irrigation, and delivery are not included.
FAQs
How much extra sod should I order?
A 5% to 10% allowance is common for simple rectangular lawns. Irregular edges, curves, cuts around beds, and repairs may need more.
Should I price sod by piece or by pallet?
Use the price mode that matches your supplier. If a pallet price is entered, the calculator prices whole pallets because that is the purchasable quantity.
Does this estimate soil preparation?
No. This calculator estimates sod coverage and material cost only. Topsoil, grading, irrigation, delivery, and installation labor are separate.
